Grizzly Lake Gros Ventre Wilderness

Grizzly Lake: Gros Ventre Wilderness Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Grizzly Lake sits in the northern foothills of the Gros Ventre Range. The oval-shaped lake is located just south of the Gros Ventre River and north of the Gros Ventre Mountains. The scenic lake, formed by an ancient landslide on the northern slope of the Gros Ventres, is tucked in a broad depression at 7,1 84 feet in elevation.

The lake is surrounded by rolling, tree-dotted hills and grassy meadows. The hike crosses the glacial moraines through a mix of open sagebrush, grassy meadows, conifer forests, and aspen groves. Throughout most of the hike are vistas of the colorful Red Hills and Lavender Hills that lie across the river valley. En route to Grizzly Lake, the trail crosses several tributary streams of the Gros Ventre River and a water ditch."

1. The Forest Svc has sold you out on this one - they traded land with a rancher that resulted in relocating the trail in a way most unfavorable for hikers. Now you go up, and you go down & up, and then you go down, and up again - BUT you are still looking back at where you started. 2. As with so much of the Gros Ventre country - including the wilderness - the are lots of cows enjoying the space. Watch where you step!
