Old Mail Trail, Trail 817 Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"This route follows the old Big Horn Toll Road, the historic mail and stagecoach route connecting Big Horn and Hyattville in the late 1800s. Both the northern and southern segments of this hike are open to motorized ATV travel; however, the middle section can provide a wilderness experience in some of the lower elevations of the Cloud Peak Wilderness.
Access roads to both ends of the Old Mail Trail can be impassable for low clearance vehicles. Another option is to park at the trailhead just east of the Shell Creek Ranger Station. Here the Adelaide Trail, also called the Shell Creek Trail, runs to the east. Like the northern and southern stretches of Trail 817, this trail is also a motorcycle trail until it reaches the boundary of the Cloud Peak Wilderness (1.4 miles). From the boundary, it is a 0.4-mile walk to reach the intersection of the Old Mail Trail."
