Bench Trail, Trail 184 Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Bench Trail is a popular biking route, and it is just as great for hiking. Sticking south of US Hwy. 14, it travels along Shell Canyon from Ranger Creek Campground to the Post Creek Picnic Area. It crosses through the historic tornado path of 1959 as well as the Shell Creek Research Natural Area.

Shell Canyon, named for the shell fossils found in the sedimentary rock walls of the canyon, is a scenic drive, but to fully appreciate its beauty, slow the pace down a bit and hike the Bench Trail. Much of the hike is under the canopy of forest, but gaps in the trees provide canyon vistas including looks at Copmans Tomb on the opposite side of the valley."

One of the most popular trails in the Bighorns. Single track the whole way!!! The bottom is very technical. We've been in contact with the Forest about stabilizing this section. Beware! they are threatening to make most of this trail into a logging road and cleaning up dead trees. That would really spoil the aesthetics of this trail.
