The Pilot Creek Trail begins at the base of Jim Smith Peak and follows the cliffs overlooking the Pilot Creek drainage. The first 2.8 miles of the hike offer panoramic views of Jim Smith Peak, the snow-capped Beartooth Range, the Clarks Fork valley, and a unique perspective of Pilot Peak directly below its south flank. The entire 7-mile trail crosses high mountain meadows along a forested creek canyon and ends in a steep mountain cirque at the east flank of Republic Peak.

Great short hike! We did this in the early morning and had the place to ourselves. Other hikers have left walking sticks at the trailhead sign. Very quaint. The hike in is steep but short and there's a great trail all around the lake. We didn't have much luck fishing (the fish are very smart, having most-likely been caught-and-released many times), but the lake was crystal clear, giving great views of them. Nice wildlife opportunities, including ducks and a glimpse of a bald eagle. Overall, one of our favorite hikes, due to the solitude.
