This drive crosses the flanks of the west side of the Black Hills from Newcastle to near Sundance. Compared to the Black Hills in South Dakota, this area is lightly visited. The first part of the drive crosses mostly private land, but the last section near Sundance climbs through national forest to the summit of the Bear Lodge Mountains, a subrange of the Black Hills.
