Blacktail Butte is a prominent 7,688-foot butte that stands alone at the south end of Antelope Flats near Moose Junction. Glaciers flowing down the valley sculpted the oval-shaped form of this Madison limestone butte. Rising 1,100 feet above the valley floor, the butte extends nearly three miles north and south along Highway 89 and is two miles wide. Blacktail Butte has trailheads at both the north end by Moose Junction and on the southeast side near Gros Ventre Road. Both trails connect at the summit, where there are sweeping vistas of the surrounding landscape. To the north and west are views across the Jackson Hole valley to the Teton Range. To the south and east are views across the National Elk Refuge to the Gros Ventre Range.
