Sykes Mountain / Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area Professional Review and Guide
"Located 12 miles north of Lovell, by the western shores of Bighorn Lake in the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. A half-day expedition into some harsh and seldom visited Wyoming landscapes."
--Bill Hunger, Hiking Wyoming (Falcon Guides).
I did this trail in June of 2016. This 3.75 mile trail is difficult to follow because the trail marker posts tend to get blown over with the constant high winds. You can pick up the trail at the ranger station at the park entrance and park your car there and when you cross the street you may have to hunt around to find the beginning trail marker. There are lots of junipers, sagebrush, and huge boulders to climb around as this trail skirts the Crooked Creek summit. This is very barren dry desert land and there are many dried gullies that look like trail that lead to nowhere. Bring a compass…you probably won’t get lost as the Horseshoe Bend Campground and marina are off to the north. If you lose the trail, just backtrack to the highway where you started.
