Bucking Mule Falls National Recreation Trail

Bucking Mule Falls National Recreation Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Located 40 miles east of Lovell, in the northwestern Big Horn Mountains. A fairly long and rugged overnight hike along the rim of a spectacular canyon; or, a 1 mile, half-day hike to the falls."

"This is the only National Recreation Trail designated in the Bighorns. The majority of users make the 5-mile round trip to the Bucking Mule Falls Overlook. The trail continues on, crossing through the upper reaches of Devil Canyon ending at Jaws Trailhead."

This review is for the through hike on Trail 053. We did not see the falls and if you were doing just the out and back falls hike I imagine it would be beautiful and a perfect day hike. A group of friends backpacked 053 through from Porcupine creek al the way through to bucking mules falls trailhead. This trail is not for the faint of heart or ill prepared. Although the FOrest Service lists this as a well marked trail on their website, there are many areas in the back country where it is not marked well and there are a number of false trails that will lead to a lot of confusion and spent energy. Additionally be aware that the elevation change on this route is SIGNIFICANT. We attempted the uphill climb out of the canyon in the afternoon on a brutally ot day. We were well supplied with water and still ran out very quickly leading to heat stress and dehydration in all of the people hiking the trail and our dogs. We had trail maps and gps and water filtration that we used at every opportunity. Once you start the north climbout of the canyon you will have miles of 20% grade or more in the sun with no opportunity for water for 5-6 miles. This can be deadly for those who are ill prepared. We also saw no people on this hike so if you ran into trouble it would be difficult to find help. The views in this canyon are breathtaking and beautiful just be very prepared for the heat, lack of water, and serious stress of climbing in this steep unforgiving terrain.

This trail is quite fun by mountain bike. From valley streams to towering cliff views there is always something to see. The end of the trail has an amazing view of Bucking Mule Falls with the shear cliff canyon walls on each side. The view west seems to go forever. Though it's not a difficult trail, it's a must see.
