South Pass City Professional Review and Guide
"Located 35 miles south of Lander, in the southernmost foothills of the Wind River Range, this is a historic day hike in high altitude, rolling prairie country.Leave Lander driving south on U.S. Highway 287. Wyoming 28 forks west 9 miles from town. This scenic highway takes you 25 miles to a South Pass City State Historical Site sign where you turn south and follow a well-graded gravel road for 2.5 miles to a large parking lot beside the historic city. Wyoming has made excellent efforts to preserve its heritage, and here is an area where history and hiking now merge. This is a day hike worth seeking and hiking. Its uniqueness and beauty won’t disappoint you. Be advised that this is probably some of the windiest country in the world."
