Lost Lake is a six-acre mountain lake that sits in a long, tree-lined valley surrounded by steep, forested hillsides. Yellow pond lilies line the shores of the shallow, pastoral lake. This hike begins from Petrified Tree, an old redwood tree buried and entombed in ash and mud from volcanic eruptions 50 million years ago. The trail from Petrified Tree to Lost Lake follows the grassy meadows through a narrow, open valley filled with wildflowers to the head of the lake. The path continues along the north side of the lake to Roosevelt Lodge, Hike 78.
