A long day hike or overnighter through some of the wildest country in Yellowstone National Park. This hike requires a shuttle. Try this trail in mid-July at the earliest, because the Pitchstone Plateau gets lots of snow. Pitchstone Plateau is a rugged hike requiring route-finding skills. Be sure to take plenty of water because reliable sources are scarce late in the summer. If you start at Grassy Lake Reservoir, the first mile is partly on an old roadbed—flat and very easy hiking.
