Big Horn Peak

Big Horn Peak Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This is a long, strenuous day hike with terrific high-altitude scenery.

This is the shortest route to one of the park’s most sensational views. The trail winds through unburned forest along Black Butte Creek for about 3 miles before angling off to the southeast and switchbacking up to the summit of Big Horn Peak. This is a Category 1 climb, but it doesn’t get super steep until you get near the top, and the well-designed and switchbacked trail helps make it easier. You hike through the Gallatin Petrified Forest and can see exposed petrified trees along the way, but please leave the petrified wood where you find it."
