Located 1 mile east of Evanston, in the extreme southwestern corner of Wyoming, this is a half-day saunter along river bottom trails. There is also a 5-mile Volksmarch-accredited trail that follows a greenbelt area along the Bear River and into the city of Evanston. Evanston, I’m told, used to exist several miles up the Bear River. But it became “just too wild a place,” beyond hope, and a group of “decent” citizens burned it down and rebuilt the town in its current location. Bear River State Park’s 280 acres were opened to the public in 1991. It’s a pretty and peaceful place, and offers a bit of leg stretching and wildlife watching in a corner of Wyoming where hiking trails are scarce.
