This segment of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route begins on a wide gravel road as it rises toward Union Pass. The road passes through a housing development, with the fancy houses perched on the steep hillside having panoramic views of the distant Pinnacle Buttes. The steep road, combined with the depth of the gravel and the added weight of a loaded bike, makes it difficult to get enough traction to make hasty headway up the mountain. Bike hiking may be the only solution at times. But the steep switchbacks are eventually left behind, giving way to rolling grasslands and pine forests crossing Union Pass.
