If you are venturing all the way to Sheep Mesa, you must be prepared for very bad weather, including hail and snow, at any time of the year. You can reach the lip of the cirque basin at the head of the West Fork in one long day’s backpack. The lower canyon requires no special precautions except a can of pepper spray, because grizzlies can be found at any place in Blackwater Creek any time during the summer or autumn. Highlights: A 4,400-foot climb with options for exploration in beautiful, wild country. The lower part of Blackwater Creek can serve as an easy day hike, leading to a view of Blackwater Natural Bridge.
