The critical factor in crossing the 130 miles of the basin is carrying enough water. It is best to load up in Atlantic City and be sure to bring along a water purifier in case you need to get water from one of those playa lakes. When you cross over the Sweetwater River, fill any empty water bottles; the next reliable water source is on the other side of the basin at A&M Reservoir. Located in Central Wyoming, between Atlantic City and Rawlins. This route follows doubletrack roads out of Atlantic City for 92 miles. The final 40 miles are on pavement. Few people venture through the area, but you won’t be alone: pronghorn, wild horses, coyotes, and prairie dogs will be your companions.
