I took the East-West portion originating near Wheeling Hospital on Mt. de Chantal Road at the Washington Ave. highway exit off I-70. It was 5:30 pm, already dark. Parked on dirt between telephone poles. Passed one person the entire time on the trail, not counting downtown portion. Relatively speaking, it was well lit since a good portion of it runs parallel to highways. 99% clear of ice even at this time of year. The tunnel was illuminated well and stayed lit during both passes through it. After the tunnel, there are a series of bridges. I found colorful sign with map & historical description of hemp. As trail merges with quiet downtown, it passes Wheeling Cycle and Marine on left. They no longer have bicycle shop upstairs, but may be helpful with knowledge in a bind. The trail becomes a 1-way loop @17th & Jacob Streets and became hard to follow @times. The white line may have been scraped off during snowplowing. There was illuminated tall Christmas tree @ampitheater by waterfront. I saw deer on way back after tunnel. There are couple trail divider posts to be aware of if riding with others. Bring light if you prefer more illumination @night. It took about 70 minutes round trip to jog this portion. My experience was fully paved. Maybe 8 years ago, I bicycled from Wheeling Cycle shop past Wheeling Hospital, where the pavement continued as gravel. At time of writing, I am unsure whether the pavement has continued. Note that just before Wheeling Hospital, there is a gym: Howard Long Wellness Center, that conducts indoor cycling classes. It may be a good place to use the bathroom, refill on water, etc. especially if you're a member or pay the $10 day pass for a post job shower! Another fun idea is to go for a post-ride pedicure with monthly special scents and products at Frederick's at the corner of where I parked (M de C Road at Washington Ave.). They have massages too.
