King in His Castle

King in His Castle Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Perched atop the dramatic sandstone cliffs of Big Schloss, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of Trout Run Valley and the mountains guarding the border between Virginia and West Virginia. Named by German immigrants, Big Schloss means “big castle,” and from this vantage point, you’ll feel like a sovereign as you peer down at the route you’ve walked.

Circumnavigating Trout Run Valley is a worthy ambition for a beginner or intermediate backpacker looking to acquire skill and improve stamina. In agreeable weather, it’s also a lovely walk with multiple lookout points, an abundance of attractive campsites, and terrain that varies from easy walking ground to
short sections of scrambling. Start at Wolf Gap and walk south to the views along Tibbet Knob before proceeding north along Long Mountain."
