Blackwater Canyon

Blackwater Canyon Professional Review and Guide

"There are several options on this scenic ride. You can start in Thomas or in Hendricks and do the ride as an out-and-back. It depends on whether you want to finish the ride climbing or descending. Or you can do a point-to-point, starting in Thomas with a shuttle to Hendricks. Whichever, it's a great ride along an abandoned railgrade through the remote and beautiful Blackwater Canyon.

Highlights: Waterfalls, canyon views, somewhat bumpy."

We started in Hendricks and steadly pumped uphill for the whole ten miles to Douglas, the waterfalls on the side of the trail on the assent were fantastic, we dipped our feet in several of them to cool off from the workout. at 8.5 miles is a great view of the valley and river and a bunch of 1888 Behive coke ovens are along the roadway as you start to enter Douglas at ten miles. Check out the Mountain workshop in the old school for neat crafts and furniture. The ride was great on the way back we hardly had to pedal the whole way down. This trip was worth the work for the views and creeks that run in to the Blackwater down below.
I really enjoyed the easy access to the trail, although the continuous bumpy incline from the Thomas side made the journey a bit more tiring than first expected. But the scenery and overlooks near the top made it worthwhile- particularly the fire tower which overlooks the WHOLE canyon- absolutely breathtaking.Bring plenty to drink, and some power bars to keep your pep.Hey, if you want the best of scenery AND skill, take the single track shortcut(?) on the way down after the tower-you'll be glad ya' did.
