Back Fork of the Elk River Above Sugar Creek to Webster Springs Bridge

Back Fork of the Elk River: Above Sugar Creek to Webster Springs Bridge Professional Review and Guide

"The Back Fork above Sugar Creek is a pretty good run, but getting to the put-in is very difficult. It starts with a 1-mile, 1,000-foot downhill carry from the scenic overlook on WV 15 west of Waneta! This section is nonstop whitewater all the way, with waves, small holes, and a few big runnable ledges toward the end.

In the next section, the action starts right away with a series of sloping ledges leading to an 8-foot falls. Sugar Creek is tight and interesting for the half mile to its junction with the main Back Fork. The river then meanders along at a Class-2 pace until the start of the “Three Falls” section."
