Start this hike at a popular camping and boat access on the New River. Trace an old riverside road upriver. Multiple water accesses are available from the doubletrack path, including beaches, still water, and rapids. The walk is mostly easy, with only moderate ups and downs. End at a river rapid, where you can explore a rocky beach. Combine this hike with a visit to the nearby Thurmond Historic District, a coal-driven boomtown from a century back, now on the National Register of Historic Places.
