Bluestone Turnpike Trail

Bluestone Turnpike Trail Professional Review and Guide

"The Bluestone Turnpike Trail follows the banks of the slow moving Bluestone River from Pipestem Resort State Park to Bluestone State Park. The hike is shady and easy. Nestled between Pipestem Resort State Park and Bluestone State Park is a quiet stretch of the federally designated Bluestone National Scenic River. Managed by the National Park Service, the designation protects the unspoiled nature of the river and the surrounding land. The Park Service has done its job well. The river is wonderfully wild and the ridges of the gorge are so steep that when sitting by the river it appears that there are only two ways out, upstream or downstream.

Luckily, both directions lead to top-notch state parks: Pipestem Resort State Park to the south and Bluestone State Park to the north. The Bluestone Turnpike Trail travels the distance between these parks. Birch and sycamore crowd the riverbank and produce deep shade during the heat of summer. If the shade isn’t enough to cool you off, there is a constant supply of swimming holes just a few steps away. Special attractions: Lazy river, deep swimming holes, and two state parks."
