Waterfalls of the Potomac Highlands Region

Waterfalls of the Potomac Highlands Region Professional Review and Guide

"You don’t need to know much about West Virginia’s Potomac Highlands. Just show up and the region teaches you. There’s a scenic view around the corner, a trout stream down that road, a ski trail a few miles up the road, and you just passed a challenging mountain bike trail. Like waterfalls? They’re everywhere, and not just little drops. The Potomac Highlands waterfalls are some of the best in the Virginias. While driving around you might pass by the highest mountain in West Virginia, Spruce Knob at 4,861 feet, or happen upon world-class rock climbers at Seneca Rocks.

This eTrail covers 16 waterfalls in this region including Falls of Hills Creek, Waterfall on Big Beechy Run, Middle Fork Falls, Whitaker Falls, Mill Creek Falls, High Falls, Upper Seneca Creek Falls, Waterfalls in Dolly Sods Wilderness Area, Pothole Falls, Blackwater Falls, Waterfall on Falls Run, Waterfalls on Shays Run, Waterfalls on Pendleton Run, Douglas Falls, Big Run Falls, and Falls Gap Falls."

Wonderful view of Blackwater falls! As you enter Blackwater state park follow signs to a 200 plus wooden deck steps to two overlooks of the falls... in the summer and fall a small gift shop is open for tourist. Lots of trails in park seem well marked. Lindy point overlook by the sled run is great too!

Blackwater Falls state park is awesome. Most of the trails to the waterfalls were very easy and well maintained, but the trail to pendleton falls has been my best hiking experience. The trailhead is near the pendleton overlook and all the trails are marked with warning signs. I found it a challenge to navagate myself down the steep grades and through the tunnels of rhododendron and mountain laurel. All in all its about a 4-5 mile hike.
