Cheat River Parsons to Cheat Lake

Cheat River: Parsons to Cheat Lake Professional Review and Guide

"The Cheat begins in the real mountains of the state as four big forks: Shavers, Glady, Laurel, and Dry, each separated from its neighbors by high mountain ridges. Shavers Fork actually flows on top of one of these ridges for miles. In this country, the shuttles are as fascinating as the rivers. Although Shavers Fork is generally considered the main source of the Cheat, the Dry Fork has the most interesting tributaries.

These include fascinating Gandy Creek, a stream that goes through a mountain; Red Creek, draining the unique Dolly Sods Wilderness Area; Laurel and Glady Forks, isolated and beautiful; the fabulous Otter Creek, which runs entirely within a wilderness area; and finally the wild and raucous Blackwater. The latter joins the Dry Fork with such volume that the river is called Black Fork until it joins the Shavers Fork in Parsons to form the Cheat. Two other significant paddling tributaries enter the lower part of the Cheat: Horseshoe Run near historic Saint George and the Big Sandy in the middle of Cheat Canyon near Masontown. The Cheat officially ends when it joins the Monongahela at Point Marion, Pennsylvania."
