Island Road

Island Road Professional Review and Guide

"A short, easy loop hike on the fifth largest island on the Ohio River. The 500-acre Blennerhassett Island is located near the confluence of the Ohio River and the Little Kanawha River. Blennerhassett Island is owned by E. I. DuPont de Nemours and Company but is held in a long-term lease by the state. The fifth largest island on the Ohio River, it is less than a quarter mile wide, but is 3.8 miles long.

The state of West Virginia is developing the eastern end of the island as a historical site. The Blennerhassett Mansion has been reconstructed on the original site. The hike begins by climbing aboard a stern-wheeler for a short trip down the Ohio River. Landing on Blennerhassett Island is something akin to stepping back in time. The park has the second largest tulip poplar on the east coast and several historical buildings, as well as a snack stand and bicycle rentals. Special attractions: A stern-wheeler ride to the park, mansion tours, and wagon rides."
