White Oak to Big Ridge Loop

White Oak to Big Ridge Loop Professional Review and Guide

"This loop climbs to the crest of Big Ridge and offers several wonderful panoramic views to the east. The 25 miles of trails in Lost River State Park range from short and easy to long and difficult.

In addition to hiking, the park also offers cabins, swimming, picnicking, and horseback riding, as well as a bit of early American history. It once belonged to Light Horse Harry Lee, the father of General Robert E. Lee. Special attractions: Big rock outcrops with great views and quiet backcountry."

Very enjoyable hike up to Cranny Crow overlook, which makes for a great lunch spot. We found the hike beyond this point didn't add much.

Spectacular views from Cranny Crow Overlook down to Cheeks. The trail markers and trail description are difficult to follow as there are so many distracting paths crisscrossing the area. Stay alert, or be ready to wander a bit. Definitely worth the time to tack on a bit of Howard's Lick Trail as well and enjoy the creek around the base of the mountain.
