Muddy Creek Upper to Cheat River

Muddy Creek: Upper to Cheat River Professional Review and Guide

"When everything else is much too high for comfort, Upper Muddy Creek offers paddlers some good options. Before World War II, the lower section was a clean stream with trout. But extensive mining in the headwaters has killed everything in it, and today the river runs reddish brown with mine waste. The T&T Mine Spill, which occurred on its headwaters, spurred the formation of Friends of Cheat.

It will be a long time before this damage can be repaired. The creek runs along WV 26; there’s a roadside rest and an old iron furnace halfway down that’s sometimes used for camping. It’s an interesting whitewater run despite the pollution. There are rocks, rocks, and more rocks! The rapids are first-rate when there’s enough water. Below the put-in the river goes through a series of boulder gardens. At low levels it’s rocky and abusive, but at high water it’s a real screamer. Be sure you know where the big drops are!"
