Allegheny Trail to Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory

Allegheny Trail to Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Record numbers of birds of prey are found near the Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory. Once you arrive at this spot, you’ll know why they hang out here: A refurbished fire tower sits atop the “hanging” rocks at 3,800 feet and affords 360-degree views.

Not only will you have a chance to see hawks and eagles, you can also take in long, narrow mountain ridges as far as the eye can see. You can even use what may be the world’s most scenically located outhouse."

"This short trek starts high and gets higher, topping out on an upthrust outcrop and observation tower made famous as a raptor-migration monitoring station. You leave a gap on Peters Mountain, then take the long-distance Allegheny Trail along the ridgeline to the open outcrop upon which stands a tower offering 360-degree views guaranteed to make the trip worthwhile."
