The Nuttallburg area is a newer hiking destination at New River Gorge National River. This abandoned mine and village was given to the park service by the Nuttallburg family in 1998. By 2011 the area had been restored by the park service, including mining facilities as well as homesites. Today a series of interconnected trails makes a visit to Nuttallburg one of the best interpretive experiences in the New River Gorge. This casual stroll will take you by the coal tipple, coal conveyor, miner housing, church, and even an old school. Be prepared to learn a lot while you’re on this mentally and physically stimulating hike.
