This solitude-filled hike traces the upper slope of the New River Gorge en route to the historic Brooklyn Mine. First walk an old roadbed up a hollow and then through field turning to forest. This is a favorable place to view wildlife. The mostly level walk turns into the main gorge, where you can soak in occasional views of the wooded canyon stretching to the yon. After a couple of miles, reach the Brooklyn Mine. Here the barred-over shaft and mine machinery can be viewed.
