Big Beaver Creek Craigsville to the Gauley

Big Beaver Creek: Craigsville to the Gauley Professional Review and Guide

"This small creek starts as an intermediate run for about a mile and then changes into one of the strangest creeks you will ever encounter. The many hydraulics are all diagonal and very powerful. All of the exposed rocks are shaped to form huge holes in high water.

A Class-6 rapid is formed where the creek funnels down to about 8 feet and then sweeps down a steep white slide into an undercut rock that you can avoid only by pitoning. After this, a fallen tree is waiting. As long as you’re out of your boat, you may as well carry the next rapid too—a hairy run around the left side of an island with an unrunable right side. Technical rapids followed by about a mile of hydraulics finish the run to the Gauley."
