Laurel Creek CR 73 to Rockville

Laurel Creek: CR 73 to Rockville Professional Review and Guide

"The boaters who discovered the Little Sandy turned their attention here, but its short length and wildly varying difficulty have kept it from becoming popular. On the plus side, it’s a short run passing through some nice forested country. It’s also a wonderful trout stream! Most of the run is fast Class 2, picking up as you paddle downstream. The last drop into the Big Sandy is a serious Class-4 ledge! Now the paddler is confronted with the Class-4 rapids of the Upper Big Sandy at high water.

Laurel Creek has been run for some distance upstream, with one intrepid party putting in at the Lake O’ Woods dam! The whitewater here is not too difficult, but strainer hazards will make most boaters uncomfortable. The stretch to the CR 2 bridge is very small, with lots of downed trees. Below here the channel becomes braided, and the river flows through the tangled brushy floodplain and low-lying islands with unnerving frequency."
