The Rock City trail is close enough to make a good day trip but far enough to make you feel just a bit isolated. The Rock City area sits high on a ridge looking down to Cheat Lake, but you won't see any of it. The area has a different feel overall than the rocks near the concession area, not as big, less side trails, etc. But the place still has a special feel. The laurel is alive, dripping water and moss onto the rocks. The place is a Zen garden done too perfectly, all elements in their place, a gardeners dream. The formations here a otherworldly, if not just strange. Take time to enjoy them. Look a how the weathering of the rocks is much different here than at the main area. Then once you get to the end of the rocks, return by way of a path that runs along the top. Look down into the quiet world that you've just left as you pad along on soft moss and through more dwarf laurels.
