Laurel to Ziler Loop Trail - Cacapon Resort State Park

Laurel to Ziler Loop Trail - Cacapon Resort State Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Hiking to the top of 2,300-foot Cacapon Mountain proves that the journey is as important as the destination. You will not be rewarded with a vista from the top, but along the way you’ll walk through a rock- studded forest thick with blueberries and mountain laurels, and a trail dotted with pink lady’s slippers.

Expect to encounter wildlife that may include birds, amphibians, reptiles, deer, and black bears. The Ziler Trail is part of an old trail used by pioneers to walk between communities in this area."

It was a nice walk in the woods, and that was about it.

There is a mistake in the guidebook -- the trail starts near Cabin 22, NOT near Cabin 24. Also, some of the trail intersections were not well marked (fortunately, most intersections were well marked).

no amazing vistas, but a solid, somewhat tough hike up the mountain and back down, with a strange but interesting abandoned barn on the mountaintop (interesting for photographers like me). The directions were very thorough.

Easy to get to. Nice park. Fair amount of parking at the lodge. Not many people, either. Mostly golfers. Good hike. Trail is wide, well marked and well maintained. Good dirt surface with a few loose stones. Plenty of big rocks to scrabble over, although you have to leave the trail to reach them. Also, plenty of places to stop for a view, which is mostly limited to the sloping hillside since in the summer the trees block the surrounding mountains. Only complaint: The trail head is at the rear of the driveway of Cabin 25, not 24. The blazes are bright and visible. Good for a short hop.
