High Falls and Red Run Falls

High Falls and Red Run Falls Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"High Falls is a strapping spiller on Shavers Fork of the Cheat River. The big water cataract is reached by a beautiful yet unusual waterfall hike. Start in the West Fork Glady Fork Valley, crossing an old rail line and community site, then climb over Shavers Mountain.

Descend a stony slope to reach an excursion rail line and Shavers Fork. Trace the rail line to pass by 10-foot Red Run Falls, a sheet spiller that tumbles into a pool on Shavers Fork. Shortly reach the star of the show—High Falls."

"This hike takes you to a powerful and scenic falls, as well as a lesser cascade, in addition to climbing over a mountain and traversing a mountain clearing. Leave the West Fork Glady Fork valley and surmount Shavers Mountain. Descend Shavers Mountain to big Shavers Fork. There, follow a little-used railroad track past Red Run Falls and continue downstream along Shavers Fork to brawny High Falls, which makes a river-wide drop." Read more
"High Falls of the Cheat River seems like a misnomer. At 100 feet wide and barely 15 feet tall, it seems they should be called Wide Falls of the Cheat River. However, the falls are at nearly 3,000 feet in elevation, making them one of the highest, in that sense, in the Mountain State. You’ll notice the elevation as you make the 3.9-mile hike over Shavers Mountain for the payoff, but the trail is not too steep and is quite varied, making the entire route enjoyable. Be forewarned—after all of your hard work, you might happen upon a crowd of people who arrived by tourist train. That’s okay, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you earned the view." Read more
