Guyandotte River: Above Baileysville and Simon to R.D. Bailey Lake and Chapmanville to Roach Professional Review and Guide

"Above Baileysville the Guyandotte does not exceed Class 1 and has little to offer a paddler except easy accessibility. From Simon to the R.D. Bailey Lake, there is a short section of Class 2–3 water, with the scenery changing to sheer sandstone cliffs. Unfortunately, most of the run is lined with discarded car bodies, tires, and garbage and trash piles. Relocation of the railroad and highway to make way for the lake has added to the scars.

The USCOE has cleaned up the riverbed somewhat in preparation for the rising lake forming behind the R.D. Bailey Dam, but this good deed is offset by the fact that the Class-3 water that used to exist is now under the lake. This is one of the most depressed areas of West Virginia. Twin Falls State Park is right in the middle of this and presents the odd contrast of state-supported grandeur in the midst of poverty."
