This unusual hike takes place at Hawks Nest State Park. Start out by dropping into the New River Gorge on a steep path to reach the river, at this point dammed as Hawks Nest Lake. Visit the waterside facilities, including a boat dock and nature center, before turning up the Hawks Nest Rail Trail. The rail trail works up the valley of Mill Creek, spilling in pools and cascades. Here you will cross some trestles before ending your hike at the site of an old mine. Then backtrack to Hawks Nest Lake. Finally, take the state park tram out of the gorge and back to the park lodge. This makes the hike a lot easier, but be apprised the tram has limited operating hours, so call ahead to make sure the tram will be open when you visit. Otherwise you can hike back out of the gorge on your own. Again, before you visit call ahead to see if the tram will be running.
