Rib Mountain State Park - Yellow Trail

Rib Mountain State Park - Yellow Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Rib Mountain is marked by contrast. To the north of this narrow ridge, open slopes and ski lifts overlook the City of Wausau. The south side is wild on its slopes and beyond. It is into this beautiful forest that you will point your snowshoes. The hill is very steep; you’ll lose and gain more than 500 feet of elevation. A bright winter sun makes the trek more pleasant. You can’t be faulted for pausing to soak up some rays—and to let your pulse rate drop. Bounding white-tailed deer will make you stop too. Deer are thick in this uncrowded park. It’s likely they will be your only companions.

Rib Mountain itself is a geological anomaly. Rising about 800 feet above the level of the Wisconsin River, it is a remnant of the area’s mountainous past. Technically it is called a monadnock, a mass of tough quartzite that has resisted a billion years of erosion and a million years of glaciation. As you hike down you will catch glimpses of another monadnock, Mosinee Hill, in the distance. Once back on top the trail skirts around Sunrise Lookout and Cobbler’s Nob, where blue-gray quartzite rocks poke out above the surface."

This trail is well-maintained with most of it covered in wood chip. It is marked with yellow 2X3” signs posted throughout. Maps of the trails (“You are HERE”) are also posted at forks in the road to help you determine which way to go. With up & down grades, it offers a good cardio workout if you’re interested. I saw numerous chipmunks and deer, but very few other people that day. It was a great place to enjoy the outdoors. I hiked this trail in the summer and loved it. But it would also be a lot of fun to snowshoe it in the winter.
