Emmons Creek

Emmons Creek Professional Review and Guide

"A segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail passes through Hartman Creek State Park and offers a fine hike through oak forest and along the clear waters of a trout stream. Hartman Creek State Park, with its quiet lakes, is a popular spot for weekend and vacation camping.

This hike takes you away from the well-known areas of the park
into its quiet southwest corner and on to the Emmons Creek Fishery and Wildlife Area. It’s a pleasant walk through an oak forest sprinkled with an occasional pine plantation or meadow-like old field to the star of the show, Emmons Creek. That
clear-running stream brightened my day. A bench, dedicated to Aldo Leopold, aids contemplation."

A good example of Wisconsin backcountry this trail (which is really just a subsection of the much larger "Ice Age Trail" -- see http://www.iceagetrail.org/) is well maintained and, at least while I was there, seldom used. In fact, once I got off the main section of trails for the park and out onto the ice age trail I never saw another person. There was plenty of wildlife around though. The scenery varies from a couple open fields early on to mixed forest which gives way to what a sign on the trail describes as one of the last "oak savannahs" in Wisconsin. Due to time constraints I didn't quite make it to the creek, but from what I did experience this trail is a nice casual hike for an afternoon trip.
