Devil's Lake East Bluff

Devil's Lake East Bluff Professional Review and Guide

"One of the more strenuous hikes, this trail climbs the rocky bluff to offer sweeping views of Devil’s Lake, notable rock formations, and hardwood forest. Spring-fed Devil’s Lake occupies a scenic gap in the South Range of the Baraboo

With three 500-foot bluff s rising from its shores and notable rock formations on the bluff tops, it has attracted visitors for centuries. This route samples the best that Devil’s Lake has to off er, while ascending and descending the spectacular East Bluff twice. These attractive trails are not a secret, and on a fine weekend day you should expect to see many other visitors."

Excellent all day hike. Trail varies greatly in terain from boardwalk to steep rock climb. There are excellent geological facts all around. Not to mention to the breath taking views of the hills all around. The top includes a nice walk through a woods that seems to make the entire hike all worth it. For a difficult yet wonderful hike down, Pot Holes is worth the view. Rugged footwear a must.
was very fun!!! Rocky Hills, some easy trails around lake, and little more diffcult up the mountain
As a note, on 7/9/08 most of the trails, including the Parfrey's Glen trail, were closed due to the massive flooding that happened in June. The hike I took is a modified popsicle hike that uses the Potholes trail from the Eastern Bluff Trail (steep 500ft down) and eastern CCC trail back to the Eastern Bluff Trail (steep 500ft up) as a way to experience more of the area. However, this hike was stunning. I am from MD (where bluffs like this just don't exist) and was able to experience this in about 4 hours for 5.5 miles. Balanced Rock and Devil's Doorway are breathtaking. The hike down and back up to Balanced Rock is tough, but the most rewarding aspects of this hike are the more difficult legs. I recommend doing the Potholes and CCC Trails which adds considerable difficulty but a real sense of accomplishment. Also, coming back via CCC to Eastern Bluff affords a second glance at Devil's Doorway - an amazing formation.
Steep climb up stone steps to start. Beautiful lake views on the ridge. Easy descend to level lakeside finish.
This is some awesome stuff. The hike is cut into some hard core rocks. It is almost like walking up 500 feet of rock stairs. Once you reach the top, the view is spectacular and you are able to look down on top of raptors (Turkey Vultures) soaring around the lake. Really fun and easy hike. We actually took our 4 year old on this and he was able to walk up the entire way. Needless to say, we were pretty impressed by this.
I took a group of 22 teenage girls of all fitness levels on this hike - all carrying backpacks. In 93 degree heat, we paced ourselves and had a great time. We didn't expect the steep descent at the south end of the bluff - stepping down large rocks - at the time with light rain that made the granite a little slippery. It was a difficult hike for us -- but the dramatic rock formations, beautiful views and the sense of accomplishment made it all worth it! What a gorgeous hike!!!
