Mound Builders Challenge Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Situated along the Red Cedar River, this challenge begins in a town where mystery and questions still exist on what exactly happened to the area’s first residents in AD 1200. You leave along a lake created by a logging-era sawmill and pass by some of the mounds the early inhabitants left behind. As you cruise over the countryside, the route passes through a town with a beautiful historic church before passing a herd of buffalo. Reaching the upper end of Red Cedar Lake, you arrive in a town named for the white birch growing along the lake’s north shore. Now traveling south, the terrain becomes more rugged.
Riding by Murphy’s Flowage, the route soon rolls through the Blue Hills before visiting a village named after a successful lumber baron. Circling to the east, you will pass the intersection where a town once stood that counted on the railroad to pass through, but the line went south leaving only some ghost lore. The residents of the next town you come to also moved when the railroad came through 3 miles to the north. As you come full circle, the route passes over the flowage of the Red Cedar River back to the park in Rice Lake."
