Oshkosh Professional Review and Guide

"Oshkosh is the seat of Winnebago County, located on the west shore of Lake Winnebago and the mouth of the Fox River. The city is only 19 miles north of Fond du Lac and 80 miles north of Milwaukee, making it an easy drive. French explorers poked around here as early as 1634, with fur traders and trappers following soon afterward. The first permanent settlement was a cluster of log cabins around a trading post in 1836. Oshkosh was incorporated as a village in 1846 and as a city in 1853, named after a local Menominee leader. By 1870 it was the state’s third-largest city. Over the years it became a rail hub and remains a major Wisconsin manufacturing center. One of its most notable products was the legendary Oshkosh B’Gosh bib overalls, which originated here in 1895.

The University of Wisconsin has a major branch here as well, which adds to the community’s cultural tone. This eTrail from the DayTrips series describes many fascinating, exciting, (and many free of charge) things to do, most within a two-hour drive of Milwaukee. Each Day Trip includes destination highlights, places to visit along the way, choice restaurants and lodging, and shopping."
