Rock Island State Park

Rock Island State Park Professional Review and Guide

"Off the tip of the Door County Peninsula is a chain of islands that stretch north across the entrance to Green Bay all the way to Michigan. These limestone islands are known for their scenery and beaches, and Washington Island in particular is an extremely popular vacation spot. North of Washington lies Rock Island, a state park that is a well-known destination for kayakers and backpackers (there are no cars or bicycles on the island).

The island can be reached by paddling or taking a small ferry from Jackson Harbor at the north end of Washington Island. The island has brilliant white cliffs and cobblestone beaches, and as in the Whitefish Dunes paddle, the combination of colors—green water, white rock, and blue sky—can be quite stunning on a fair day. The island also has a system of hiking trails that circle the island, giving you a change of pace or an alternate activity when the weather’s rough."
