Chippewa Moraine / Plummer Lake

Chippewa Moraine / Plummer Lake Professional Review and Guide

"This section of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail even comes with an interpretive center. Learn about the geological features before you pass them. Along the rising and falling terrain, you will pass no fewer than twenty kettle lakes.

Any short walk on the Chippewa Moraine’s Circle Trail offers views full of beautiful rounded hills and kettle lakes. Hike the Ice Age Trail east from there and the scenery never lets up, while the trail just keeps getting quieter. Start by walking northeast from the interpretive center, descending on a connector trail."

A enjoyable trail. My wife and I were unsure what to expect, and enjoyed this one throughly. The scenery was beautiful, we did not run into anyone on the trail, and the ranger was knowledgable. We took this trail all the way east to Count Highway E, and also included a number of logging roads. If one goes all the way to "E" then the trail (with the loop) is 23 miles long. We managed to get over 30 miles by adding a few logging roads. There is a fair amount of elevation change that can generate a sweat on even a cool day. The trail in the Ice Age Reserve is better maintained the the trail outside the reserve. But in all cases, the trail was well marked and we had no problem keeping on the trail. Be aware that selective logging proceeds on the county lands, and that the trail might disappear if logging is occurring on the trail. The scenery was interesting and the elevation changes were moderate. We accomplished 30 miles in 2 days with packs.
