Stewart County Park

Stewart County Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Multiple loops take you through a ravine and thick woods and over a hill of restored prairie for a fantastic view of the countryside. A spring-fed creek feeds the diminutive Stewart Lake.

Stewart Park was the first park in the Dane County park system. Central to the property is Stewart Lake, which was created by a dam on a spring-fed creek. Located just north of Mount Horeb, it is nestled in at the edge of some of the residential neighborhoods but
offers good wilderness and a hilltop view of the surrounding countryside. Restrooms are located right at the parking lot. The trail begins at the end of the parking lot and follows an asphalt path from the lot right along forest. Water runs down this channel after heavy rains. There’s a pavilion to the left and a playground in this mowed area."

"This shorter hike winds its way through a series of loops that take you past a lake and through wooded hills bounded by residential development on the outskirts of Mount Horeb. Just a short drive from Madison, Stewart County Park, which opened in 1935, is Dane County’s oldest park. Fishing is popular on the lake, which also has a beach and nearby playground area. Soon after setting out from the trailhead, you reach the lake and pass by the park’s small beach, which is claimed by Canada geese in cooler months. Off to the left you can see the dam that created the lake. With patience, you may spot one of the lake’s snapping turtles." Read more
