Pines and Mines Trails

Pines and Mines Trails Professional Review and Guide

"This eTrail is written more as an overview of a trail system than as a turn by turn guide, and in the end focuses on only a small portion of this enormous network. The Pines and Mines Trails in Wisconsin’s far northern country cover more than 300 miles of ground stretching from Iron County into Upper Michigan along the eastern shore of Lake Superior. The idea to keep in mind while riding this system is exploration. The only way to ride here is to spend time here, and more than just an afternoon. Consider setting up a base camp from which to ride out and view the surrounding forests and towns or to travel to the area lakes and streams to spend a portion of the day fishing.

Elevation Change: The trail described below and mapped out within this chapter departs from Montreal, just west of Hurley. Logging roads are notoriously flat though in an area such as this climbing is inevitable at times, in most cases on a steady grade instead of a steep pitch. Trail 6 feels mountainous for flatlanders, with two climbs of 200+ feet."

The prime riding time is fall when the trees have changed and the weather is ripe for campfires and flannel shirts. This cooler weather is ideal for long days in the saddle and nights under the stars. Spring comes late this far north and snow is not unusual in April and even into early May.
