Northwoods Area, Wisconsin Professional Review and Guide
"The vast Northwoods area of Wisconsin offers families an unspoiled, natural setting for a vacation of down-to-earth pleasures. Most northern Wisconsin communities were once lumbering centers, and the lore and legends of those days live on, although the logging industry declined by the early 1900s. Today the Northwoods is a sporting paradise and summer vacation retreat. Families come here for the scenic woodlands and lakes.
While there are no official boundaries for the Northwoods, the region is considered to be the north-central (north of Wausau) and northeastern (north of Green Bay) part of the state. Oneida County, where Minocqua, Woodruff, and Rhinelander are situated, and Vilas County, home to Arbor Vitae and Lac du Flambeau, are its tourist centers. Minocqua, called the “Island City,” is one of the area’s popular summer resorts, thanks to the lake that surrounds it and its proximity to more than 3,000 lakes and ponds, the largest concentration of freshwater lakes in the world."
