Audubon Days Ramble Professional Review and Guide

"John James Audubon would have liked Horicon Marsh. As he roamed the frontier of the United States in the early nineteenth century, Audubon often found vast, wild places filled with wonderful birds to paint and write about. The country has changed, and such havens are becoming fewer. Today there aren't many that can match the expense of the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge.

Nearby Mayville is the starting point for this route. It's one of three distances offered as part of the town's annual Audubon Days celebration, which is always held on the first weekend of October. It's a fun, small-town festival, featuring a variety of sports and entertainment, including a rubber duck race in the Rock River. On a breezy day you can look over and watch the tall green cattail reeds roll like the waves on a sea. In fall and spring the air over the marsh will be alive with chevron formations of honking Canada geese and other birds. Each year they visit Horicon in the tens of thousands on their way to and from their nesting areas. Birds in flight are one of nature's greatest wonders. Bring a pair of binoculars and you'll soon be able to tell the disciplined formations of geese from those of the cranes and ducks."
