Geneva Lake North Shore Hike

Geneva Lake: North Shore Hike Professional Review and Guide

"It’s easy to see why so many wealthy Chicagoans built their opulent mansions on the shore of Geneva Lake (the lake is called Geneva Lake; the town is called Lake Geneva) during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The views from the wooded bluffs along this silvery lake are fantastic. While enjoying the lake and the historic estates on this hike, you’ll encounter flower gardens, carefully landscaped lawns, boathouses, and pleasant little towns."

The Greene Valley Forest Preserve 4 mile loop has a good variety of wooded areas, open prairie and gently rolling terrain. Whether you enjoy running, bicycling, bird watching, or just a leisurely stroll through nature, this winding, crushed limestone trail can be a pleasant outdoors experience for just about anyone. If you feel like stopping to sit down along the way, it offers some interesting split log benches. There are 2 parking lots adjacent to the 4 mile trail with easy access from Thunderbird Rd and Greene Rd. Nearby is also 190 ft Greene Valley Hill with its Scenic Overlook. It is the biggest hill you will find in the area. However, if you’re interested in walking up & down its grassy slopes, I don’t have good news. Since it is a former landfill, its side slopes are off limits to the public because of liability issues. The only approved access to the top is the road that goes up there, which is open only on weekends from May thru October.
