Hartman Creek Ramble Professional Review and Guide
"The quiet roads of Waupaca County are popular routes to pedal. The pavement is usually good, and the scenery varies from farmland to woods, from swift- running streams to clear blue lakes. The Chain O' Lakes area is vacationland Wisconsin-style, and relaxed hospitality is the word. Several tours use these roads, but this loop is part of one of the most popular: the Hartman Creek Metric Century, held on the first weekend of June. Leaving the tall pines of Hartman Creek State Park, you'll head east on one of the prettiest roads in the state. Rural Road has been designated a State Rustic Road, thereby protecting it from development.
You'll appreciate that as you glide past the Old Stagecoast Inn and other simple Greek Revival houses. The Crystal River twists through the tiny village of Rural. Wouldn't you like to live there, just to have a postmark that says Rural, Wisconsin? You'll notice that roads are seldom straight and that streams twist and turn every which way. Ten thousand years is not a very long time for the forces of nature to erode what the glacier dumped. The result is bicycling that's never boring. There's always another scenic view around the next corner. Often that view is of a glacial lake like Hartman Lake, which is a great place to take a dip after your ride, by the way."
